2022 Lexus GX 460 The Lexus GX SUV has been around for a long time, and while it doesn’t follow the same formula as most modern luxury crossovers – built on a separate frame, like the old-style pickup truck-based SUVs – its charm lies in its off-road capability and quiet cab.
Talking about the cabin, the GX offers space for up to seven thanks to three rows of seats, so families can explore nature or travel overland in relative comfort. The 4.6 liter V-8 is the engine’s only option and, while not very fuel-efficient, produces 301 hp and powers all four wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission.
Where the GX shows its age the most is in the technology features it has available. An 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen is standard, but the software interface is not as cutting-edge as on more modern Lexus models such as the LS and ES sedans or the UX subcompact SUV; it doesn’t even have common connectivity features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
But apart from the Land Rover Defender, the GX is one of the few options left in the mid-size luxury SUV segment that can be used off-road.
Lexus has made some changes to the aging GX SUV for 2021 but has added a Premium Plus trim between the premium mid-range and top-spec luxury models. It comes standard with a power-operated third-row seat and a Mark Levinson premium stereo system.
The GX infotainment system now offers Amazon Alexa compatibility. Wood and the heated leather steering wheel are now optional on the Premium and Premium Plus models.

The 2021 Lexus GX 460 uses truck-style body-on-frame construction. That means this mid-sized Lexus SUV is tough and can pull in £ 6,500 – more than its car-based crossover competitors. And off-road, the Lexus GX shines, thanks to the low-shift full-time all-wheel-drive system, advanced electronic traction control, and the available crawl control feature that allows the GX to master difficult paths slowly. but the speed is still.
As a people hauler, GX is not very good, but still quite capable. That’s seven seats in three rows, or six people when the second-row captain’s seat is reserved. The third-row fold is best for children, but the middle seat has plenty of room.
The workmanship inside and out is superb, exactly what we expect from Lexus. Despite a lot of comforts and some good standard safety technology, this generation of GX, which debuted in 2009, looks a bit dated.
Most of today’s SUVs are designed more for city driving than tackling cobbled roads and dirt roads. The Lexus GX 460 2021 is a little different. It’s quite capable of handling such menial tasks thanks to a special suspension system that improves wheel articulation in off-road situations. This, combined with a low-range 4WD system, maximizes traction when you need it most.
Unfortunately, the GX 460’s off-road focus interferes with road comfort. We love the firm seating position and user-friendly interior, but the ride is stiff on less than perfect sidewalks. Other downsides include an underpowered and very thirsty V8 and a lack of cargo space.

The Lexus GX 460 2021 is a three-line luxury SUV available in three trim levels: base, premium, and luxury. Each is powered by a 4.6 liter (301 horsepower, 329 lb-ft) V8 engine mated to a standard six-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel drive.
2022 Lexus GX 460 Interior and Exterior
Lexus gave the GX its last full redesign in 2010, and this may be one of the reasons for its somewhat dated look. The interior is home to luxurious looking wood and leather, but some hard plastics seem out of place in vehicles in this price range.
Front-row passengers enjoy pleasant accommodations and a high seating position, but the second-row seats are flat and hard, and the third row is a narrow space best suited for children. Remarkably, the GX does an excellent job of keeping road noise out of the cab, and the interior remains quiet even when the vehicle is driving at high speeds.
This Lexus provides 11.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row and 46.7 cubic feet behind the second row. With the second and third rows folded, cargo space jumped to 64.7 cubic feet. This is less space than you will get in rival models like the Audi Q7 (14.2 cubic feet behind the third row, 35.7 cubic feet behind the second row, and 69.6 cubic feet behind the first row).
With body-on-frame construction, the GX 460 is a throwback to the previous era of luxury SUVs (as is the larger Toyota Land Cruiser based Lexus LX 570). Lexus is trying to add to that old foundation with technology, adding Amazon Alexa compatibility for the 2021 model year.
This allows owners to remotely unlock or lock doors, check fuel levels, start engines, or control climate settings from a connected smart device. However, these capabilities also require Lexus’ Enform Remote telematics service, which is only free for the first year of ownership.
GX offers a variety of attractive technology facilities. The base model comes with a nine-speaker audio setup and an infotainment system governed by an 8.0-inch touchscreen. Standard Bluetooth connectivity facilitates hands-free phone calls, and all models are equipped with the SiriusXM satellite radio.
The choice of technology features available includes a dual-screen rear-seat entertainment system and integrated navigation. The list of options also includes the 17-speaker Mark Levinson sound system.
2022 Lexus GX 460 Engine
The Lexus GX 2021 continues to offer just one engine: the 4.6-liter V-8 that produces 301 horsepower and 329 lb-ft of torque. This engine is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. Lexus’s Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System is standard, and this arrangement aims to increase traction during off-road adventures.
During our tests, the GX went from zero to 60 mph in 7.2 seconds. We have tested a much faster rival model. An Audi Q7 with available V-6 sprints in 6.1 seconds and the BMW X5 xDrive50i covers the same distance in 4.2 seconds.
The GX demonstrates relatively smooth handling on paved roads but remains in the elements when taken off. -road. Its solid base and 8.1-inch ground clearance make this SUV an excellent choice for buyers who need a vehicle that is comfortable in the outdoors. The crane capacity of 6500 pounds supports its versatility.

The GX 460 brings back fuel economy with a dismal EPA rating from 15 mpg city, 19 highways, 16 combined.
Full-time four-wheel drive with 2-speed transfer box and low-haul gearbox is standard, while the optional Off-Road package adds Multi-Terrain Select, which includes driving modes for different surfaces, and Crawl Control, which automatically holds one set, low speed when off-road.
As before, the GX 460 comes standard with the Lexus Safety System + a bundle of driver aids, including automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, automatic high beam, and cruise control.
2022 Lexus GX 460 MPG
The GX will not win any awards for fuel economy. According to the EPA, this all-wheel-drive SUV achieves a mileage of just 15/19 mpg on the city/highway. That puts it well behind rival luxury SUVs like the Lincoln Aviator, which gets 17/24 mpg when equipped with all-wheel drive.
During our use of the GX, we observed a range of just 20 mpg during the 200-mile road fuel-economy test – which is part of our comprehensive testing regimen.
With a 4.6 liter V8 engine (producing 301 horsepower and 329 lb-ft of torque) and a full-time 4-wheel drive system (with dual distance transfer box), the Lexus GX 2021 has a passion for fuel.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Lexus GX 460 has a rating of 15 miles per gallon in the city, 19 mpg on the highway, and 16 mpg in combined driving.
With a fuel capacity of 19 gallons, that means the GX will cover about 300 miles before it needs to be refilled.
2022 Lexus GX 460 Price and Release Date
The base model Lexus GX460 2021 comes with enough standard features to please most buyers in this segment. The SUV uses standard 18-inch wheels, and all models are equipped with exterior features such as automatic LED headlamps, daytime running lights, illuminated running boards, and power-adjustable side mirrors with integrated turn signals.
A power-adjustable ten-way front seat and tilt steering column and power-adjustable telescope are available to help you find your ideal position behind the wheel.
