Where the GX shows its age the most is in the technology features it has available. Impressively enough over the 11 years, the old platform has become somewhat relevant in the era. the fully electric and hybrid platforms of all major carmakers, including its parent – Toyota.

But we’ll have to wait a little longer for that, as the Lexus GX 2022 is also expected to be based on the 2nd generation platform, and the remains of the slightly updated Lexus GX 2021. The Lexus GX 460 2022 will show off subtle updates in the form of a new exterior finish. It will continue to be offered in 3 trims – Base, Premium, and Luxury for the same price as 2021MY. This will put the base trim at an MSRP of $ 53,450 and go up to $ 64,715 for the Luxury trim. With the Lexus GX 2022, this SUV will enter its MY 13 which is quite tiring. Hopefully, this will end next year, as rumors say the Lexus GX 2023 will be a new generation with hybrid power.
Lexus GX 2022 Will Continue Well With Old 301 Hp 4.6L V8
The Lexus GX 2022 will continue to pack the only Naturally Aspirated 4.8L V8 producing 301 hp and 329 lb-ft of power. This engine has been feeding the power of this sharp SUV since its existence and continues, thanks to its extreme flexibility in terms of performance and traceability. These numbers are very disappointing for an SUV that weighs more than 5,000 pounds.
But Lexus has grown tired and reduced its power outages by providing a smart Kinetic Dynamic Suspension system as standard. The GX 2022 will also continue to enjoy these perks and will also have a maximum crane capacity of 6,500 pounds. All of this allows us to forgive him for the sluggish performance and the 0-60 mph acceleration figure which takes a sweet 7.2 seconds.
Is The Lexus GX 460 Worth Buying
Take the GX460 off-road, or even on a surface that feels like off-road, and it makes sense. The Lexus fun, character-controlled driving and ornate luxury cabin are the most attractive things about it. But that’s not the same as great value.

The front row passengers offer a high seating position, but the second-row seats are narrow and hard, and the third row is restricted to children. But Lexus has made sure that the cabin is noise-free and the cabin remains quiet even when driving at high speeds on the highway.
There are some hard plastic panels throughout the cabin that convinced us to trust it to be part of a rugged but not cutting edge off-road pedigree. The Lexus GX provides 11.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row and 46.7 cubic feet behind the second row. With the second and third rows folded, the cargo space is 64.7 cubic feet. It’s a bit smaller space than what you see in the cabins of rival models like the Audi Q7 but still manages to get close to its competitors and all three SUVs have similar seating layouts. The GX 460 needs serious upgrades to keep itself competitive with its competitors as the user interface on the 8-inch touchscreen unit is boring compared to the iDrive interfaces on Audi’s Bimmers and MMIs.
The missing Apple Carplay and Android Auto compatibility is another major reason that makes it out even when compared to the segment below!
However, Lexus offers its own Enform Remote service, an application-based technology that allows you to connect your smartphone and smartwatch. It allows you to receive services such as engine start, climate control, fuel level check, Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Siri. The Lexus GX 460 2022 looks no different from the model launched a decade ago. The exterior looks dated compared to its core rivals in the market. Last year, the Lexus GX 460 received front facia tweaks with a redesigned front grille and headlights that relieve pain by a margin but that won’t last long enough and with its competitors receiving 2nd upgrades and in some cases 3rd generation, Lexus need a serious wake-up call!
Apart from the standard exterior features, Lexus also offers buyers the option to change the aesthetic with a few additional packages. The Sport Design Package adds even more attention to detail, by offering a lowered surround grille, rear valence, side mirrors, matte black exhaust tip, red tail light.
The 19-inch wheels available with this package also fill in the gaps created by the expanding fenders.
The Lexus GX 460 is the heaviest SUV of the bunch weighing over 5,000 pounds but carrying around the curb with grace. It does come with a lot of struggle in the city but even in extreme off-road conditions, the GX manages to stay gripping throughout the ride and doesn’t sweat the driver either.
The BMW X5 is the tallest SUV that helps it achieve some of the characteristics of a centric sedan with impressive cornering and acceleration cues. The key exterior features of the Lexus GX 460 2022 are:

All trims have a single-engine option and are combined with the 6-Speed Automatic transmission that comes standard with an impressive Four Wheel Drive System that gives this sizable SUV the passion to tame any kind of terrain you face.
Lexus also offers a Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System as standard which helps improve traction when off-road. Ironically, the aging ladder-on-frame chassis is one of the main reasons for its brutal, non-comparative off-road prowess that tends to leave the competition by a large margin. The downside here is the relatively higher rev range to build, at torque due to the absence of forced induction.
The GX 460 is smooth for use on paved roads but shows its true colors when taken off-road. Its solid base and 8.1-inch ground clearance make it a great choice for outdoor touring. The BMW X5 is one of these groups to get the most out of the turbocharged unit as its torque curve comes in at an impressive 1,500 RPM for an SUV of its caliber. But Lexus is the only one from this group that can use 4WD.
The Lexus GX 2022 continues to offer just one engine: the 4.6-liter V-8 that produces 301 horsepower and 329 lb-ft of torque. This engine is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.
Lexus’s Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System is standard, and this arrangement aims to increase traction during off-road adventures. During our tests, the GX went from zero to 60 mph in 7.2 seconds. We have tested a much faster rival model. An Audi Q7 with the available V-6 made the sprint in 6.1 seconds, and the BMW X5 xDrive50i covered the same distance in less than 4.2 seconds.
The GX exhibits relatively smooth handling on paved roads but keeps the elements off-road. Its solid base and 8.1-inch ground clearance make this SUV an excellent choice for buyers who need a vehicle that is comfortable in the outdoors. The crane capacity of 6500 pounds supports its versatility.
2022 Lexus GX 460 MPG
The Lexus GX holds disappointing fuel economy figures. According to the EPA, the Lexus GX 460 2022 continues to return 15 MPG in the city and 19 MPG on the road which remains unchanged from 2020 as there are no updates to the drivetrain yet. In the era of hybridization, Lexus has decided to embrace natural aspirations and strive on the front of fuel efficiency and is one of the main reasons why we feel that the GX 460 has passed its renaissance.
However, with a large enough offer, the specialty is in the fuel tank capacity. Lexus packs in an impressively large 23-gallon fuel tank but when coupled with the subpar MPG figure all the impression fades away due to its competition with a slightly smaller fuel tank however the much higher MPG figure offers a wider driving range which can concurrently as a touring vehicle too. There are 3 driving modes, namely Standard, Sport, and ECO, which don’t help much to maintain the comfort of this thirsty V8.
Lexus stands helpless when it comes to MPG numbers compared to its much more modern competitors. The turbocharged engines in the BMW X5 and Audi Q7 help maintain better MPG numbers without compromising front-end performance.
The BMW X5 stands out in this group with the highest MPG numbers and despite having the smallest fuel tank size of this group, it outperforms the others in terms of driving distance. The Audi Q7’s 2022 mpg figures rank among the efficient and aging Lexus Bimmer.
The GX will not win any awards for fuel economy. According to the EPA, this all-wheel-drive SUV achieves a mileage of just 15/19 mpg on the city/highway. That puts it well behind rival luxury SUVs like the Lincoln Aviator, which gets 17/24 mpg when equipped with all-wheel drive.
During our use of the GX, we observed mileage of just 20 mpg during our 200-mile road fuel-economy test – which is part of our comprehensive testing regimen.
2022 Lexus GX 460 Price
The Lexus GX 460 2022 starts at $ 53,100 for the base trim, $ 55,890 for the Premium trim, and $ 64,365 for the luxury trim. When compared to the 2020 Lexus GX 460 price tag, the price for this new model has hit $ 100 across the trim-table which doesn’t disappoint considering the additional features that are now in place.
The car still maintains its presence on the road and hasn’t forgotten the large front spindle grille that has long puzzled the car community!
2022 Lexus GX 460 Release Date
The Lexus GX 460 2022 has been slated to launch in Fall 2020 and has seen a slight increase in price which still makes it the cheapest offering in its segment. If you’re willing to trade luxury for a sturdy Japanese engine and rock-solid performance then the GX 460 is the car you need. The GX never disappoints when it comes to performance.
The only drawback is the fuel economy. We hope that Lexus offers design changes to the SUV and refines the engine for better performance and mileage.
