2022 Lexus LS Lexus facelifted its flagship LS sedan last year with subtle exterior changes, re-tuned suspension, and most importantly, a new touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It’s only been a year since this facelift that the LS will get another notable update for the 2022 model year, at least in a hybrid form.
The 2022 Lexus LS 500h will be the first model in the United States to offer Lexus Teammates advanced driver assistance technology. This advanced feature was previously available in the Japanese market but is not available in the United States for regulatory reasons.
The Lexus Teammate package includes two important features: Advanced Drive and Advanced Park. Advanced Drive supports SAE Level 2 semi-autonomous driving, such as Cadillac’s Super Cruise and Tesla’s Autopilot. Only Honda Legend in Japan currently offers a Level 3 system.
Lexus says the Advanced Drive is designed for roads with limited access and supports the partial hands-free operation. We haven’t tested this system yet, but it sounds a lot more sophisticated than the one currently on offer at LS. Lexus hasn’t detailed how long it will take for this system to support hands-free driving, so it looks like Super Cruise still has a bit of an edge.
Advanced Park does exactly what its name suggests, controlling steering, acceleration, braking, and shifting gears during parking maneuvers. The system uses 360-degree sensing combined with a bird’s-eye view to make parallel parking or reverse into the space fully automated.
Oddly enough, Lexus determined that this new feature would only be available on the 2022 LS 500h with AWD, which means the RWD model won’t have it. The press release oddly doesn’t mention the non-hybrid LS 500 that owns the Lexus Teammate, and CarBuzz has contacted Lexus to find out why this might be.
While not mentioned in the release, it looks like the LS 2022 will receive a new, all-digital instrument cluster, replacing the current split unit. The Lexus LS 500 2022 and LS 500h 2022 are expected to hit dealerships later this fall, so more information has to be had before that.

Developed based on the Mobility Teammate Concept, Lexus Teammate is built on the belief that people and vehicles can work together in partnership to help achieve safe, comfortable, and efficient mobility. The Lexus Teammate on the LS 500h with AWD provides two functions: Advanced Drive and Advanced Park.
Advanced Drive is designed to accurately detect driving conditions to plan and execute acceleration, braking, and steering commands to keep the vehicle on course, follow other vehicles, change lanes, navigate certain intersections and traffic jams, and overtake slower vehicles. Advanced Drive supports SAE Level 2 functionality which enables driving on roadways with limited access with the partial hands-free, eye-to-road operation. This feature can benefit drivers by reducing fatigue over long periods of time and allowing drivers to pay more attention to their surroundings for better safety.
Advanced Park assists the operations required for hands-free safe and secure parking by automatically controlling steering, acceleration, braking, and shifting of gears when parking parallel or backing into a parking lot. Using 360-degree sensing, which integrates a complete all-around camera function and an ultrasonic sensor, the system also provides a bird’s-eye view to allow the driver to check the vehicle’s position relative to any obstacle during Advanced Park operation.

2022 Lexus LS Update
Toyota showed off its new advanced driver assistance system for Mirai and Lexus LS in Japan on Thursday this week. At that time, there were no details, but there was no indication whether the system would go to US-bound Toyota and Lexus products. We have the answer today.
This Level 2 driver assistance system will be deployed in the US on the Lexus LS 500h 2022 when it launches later this year. Lexus named it the “Lexus Teammate”, making it clear from the start that this was not a fully autonomous vehicle. The system is your teammate; it doesn’t take over, and instead you two work together.
With Teammate activated, the vehicle can accelerate, brake, and steer to maintain the lane and follow/keep up with other vehicles. It can change lanes on its own to pass slower vehicles and can also navigate intersections. Lexus said it could be used on “limited access roadways,” and noted that it was only “partial handsfree” in operation. The company also notes that you have to keep an eye on the road for it to work – there are cameras monitoring drivers and making sure that they are.

Lexus didn’t say what other vehicles we should expect from this system next, but the LS 500h and LS 500 (sometime after the hybrid) will have them this fall.
In addition to road assistance, Lexus announced a parking assistant. Named Advanced Park, it can assist in hands-free parking for parallel parking or backward into space. It will control steering, acceleration, and shifting gears when self-parking, and you will be able to see how it performs using 360-degree camera technology. Just press a button, and your Lexus will park itself.
The LS is the sedan launching the Lexus brand, but the 2022 model wears a much sharper suit than the 1990 original. Against established luxury four-doors such as the Audi A8, BMW 7-series, and Mercedes-Benz S-class the challenges are as many today as when the LS was first launched, but Lexus dazzles with its Japanese aesthetic and distinctive design.
A twin-turbo V-6 is standard, but those concerned with fuel efficiency can upgrade to a hybrid powertrain – even if power delivery isn’t all that fancy. The same can be said about the LS’s riding experience: It lacks the athletic nature we value in some of its competitors. But the LS’s interior is just as quiet and almost as comfortable as its German counterpart, and you’ll still look like a boss when you stop at the valet parking lot.
Lexus has made slight changes to its flagship luxury sedan for 2022. The LS receives new headlamps and trims around the exterior, and Lexus says the inside is quieter thanks to a tweaked active noise cancellation system. The biggest improvement, however, comes in the form of a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, which replaces the troublesome touchless screen we’ve been pissing off for years.
Well, it’s mostly about technology, functionality, and design, to some extent. To be honest, we wouldn’t have it any other way. We’re sure the LS has matured into a stunning visual display and just needs a few fine adjustments here and there, so let’s see what changes are made.
Three and a half years since the fifth-generation model was introduced, the Lexus LS stands a better chance of taking on the Germans, especially as there’s a new Mercedes S-Class around the corner. You’d be hard-pressed to see a change in style because the flagship luxury sedan hasn’t changed much.
There is a fancy new color called Gin-ei Luster, a “fabulous silver” with a mirror-smooth texture.
The headlights look a little different from before as the LS adopts the adaptive high-beam system introduced in the 2019 RX. Lexus also tweaked the front bumper to add vertical character lines at both corners, while the spindle grille has a sizable radar sensor module with its washer.
Images released so far show the LS 500 in F Sport specs and the LS 500h, with both featuring slightly updated tail light graphics and Piano Black trim instead of the previous chrome trim. There are several new wheel designs to choose from, including the 20-inch set for the F Sport version.
These changes may seem minor, but that’s because Lexus’ main focus is on improving comfort. The adaptive suspension has been optimized to offer a smooth ride, further enhanced by revisions to the stabilizer bars and engine mounts.
Even the seat covers now have deeper seam points along with low resilient urethane for seat cushions for increased comfort. The seats are said to be softer than before and can absorb vibrations better.
Lexus says the conventionally powered LS 500 has improved low-end torque and a faster gearbox, while the hybrid system on the LS 500h is being used more often than ever for better acceleration. Both use an updated Active Noise Control and Engine Sound Enhancement system for a quieter cabin.
Lexus LS 2022 Redesign
Freshly refreshed for 2021, we expect the full-size Lexus LS luxury sedan to be carried largely unchanged for 2022. That means a sedan with handling belies its size and a beautiful artistic interior, along with some quirks. However, Lexus has announced that the 2022 LS500h hybrid will be offered with a next-generation semi-autonomous drive system.
The Lexus Teammate is a Level 2 system that allows the driver to take his hands off the wheel in certain situations. When activated, the Lexus Teammate has the ability to steer, accelerate and brake without driver intervention. In addition to hands-free capabilities, the way the 2022 LS handles lane changes or expressway intersections without driver intervention is what sets it apart from the adaptive cruise control system and lane guard assistance that existed in 2021 LS.
Drivers must remain alert when the Lexus Teammate is activated; Built-in cameras monitor body posture, head direction, and distractions. However, if all parameters are met, drivers can take their hands off the steering wheel and let the car handle many of the basic driving tasks. After debuting in the 2022 LS500h, it is hoped that the Lexus Teammate will be offered on more Lexus models in the coming years.
Two years after a complete redesign, the Lexus LS is still quite attractive. But the futuristic look doesn’t stop with sculpted sheet metal. Inside, the LS pushes the boundaries of luxury cars with intricate wood inlays and even cut glass inserts. But don’t let the futuristic look make you think this LS is anything other than the traditional Lexus: smooth, quiet, and incredibly comfortable.
In addition to a myriad of standard luxury features, the LS can be equipped with extras such as a 24-inch head-up display, a 28-way power-adjustable front seat, a panoramic sunroof, and even a 22-way adjustable rear seat with heating and ventilation. . More traditional luxury-car amenities, such as an excellent audio system, air suspension, and all-wheel drive can also be added.
The designer also changed the button settings on the steering wheel, making it more visible and tidier. And speaking of designers, the LS cabin is available for the first time in Nishijin & Haku trim, basically in a metal leaf pattern. In terms of comfort, there’s a new noise-canceling arrangement that Lexus says has been adjusted for quieter drives.
For the update, Lexus has made a series of light visual changes, added a more luxurious touch to the cabin, and introduced new driver-assist technology including a self-driving feature.
Lexus isn’t the only manufacturer that takes luxury sedans seriously. The Mercedes-Benz S-Class has long been the benchmark for this segment while the legendary BMW 7 Series offers a more modern look and Porsche’s Panamera has a performance base covered. However, while the Lexus LS doesn’t offer the same power and performance options, the Lexus LS is unique and built to the same high-quality standards.
The 2020 Lexus LS is offered in just one trim but offers a set of standalone options as well as a package of options that allows buyers to make considerable customization. But only one engine and transmission combo are available with the LS 500, a twin-turbocharged V6 engine (416 horsepower, 442 lb-ft of torque) mated to a 10-speed automatic. The LS can be had with rear or all-wheel drive.
Standard feature highlights include 19-inch wheels, adaptive suspension, LED headlamps, sunroof, hands-free trunk operation, power closing doors, leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats with power adjustment, and a tough rear glass guard.
The unit is compatible with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa but most importantly, it integrates neatly into a wonderfully crafted interior. That’s quite important because Lexus doesn’t believe luxury should be defined by large screens, regardless of how sharp the graphics and user experience they offer.
The technology features include a 12.3-inch center screen, navigation system, trackpad-style interface, Apple CarPlay, and a 12-speaker audio system. Lastly, standard driver assistance includes blind-spot monitoring, rear traffic alerts, forward collision mitigation, lane maintenance assistance, and adaptive cruise control.
Single options include an air suspension, adaptive LED headlamps, a panoramic glass roof, a powerful audio system, and a wood and leather heated steering wheel. Options packages range from the Safety System + A package, which includes driver aids such as adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, to the Luxury and Executive packages that add a touch of upscale for front and rear passengers as well as an assortment of materials and interior designs trim.
2022 Lexus LS 500h AWD
Three days ago, Toyota launched its Advanced Drive autonomous driving technology in Japan, and the first vehicles to receive it was the Lexus LS 2022 and the Toyota Mirai FCEV. Our report states that Advanced Drive will arrive on all US-bound Lexus LS models – especially the LS 500h hybrid – any time soon, but we don’t expect it to come this soon.
In its official press release, the Lexus LS 500h hybrid AWD 2022 will get the all-new Lexus Teammate ADAS technology. However, the Lexus Teammate will also come with Toyota’s Advanced Drive and Advanced Park, effectively making the LS hybrid the first Lexus vehicle in America to come standard with features similar to the Tesla Autopilot and Cadillac Super Cruise.

We’ve mentioned the Lexus Teammate and Park Assist in previous reports on the Lexus LS 2021. Park Assist takes control of the steering, braking, and acceleration when parking the vehicle. But with Toyota’s Advanced Park infusion, the system uses 360-degree sensing and ultrasonic sensors to offer a broad view of the vehicle’s surroundings.
Meanwhile, Advanced Drive is Toyota’s Level 2 autonomous drive system. It supports the partial hands-free eye-on-road operation by controlling acceleration, braking, and steering. Advanced Drive also allows changing lanes, following lanes, overtaking, and slowing down traffic operations with minimal driver intervention.
Lexus Team up with Advanced Drive and Advanced Park is standard in the Lexus LS 500h 2022 hybrid AWD. We have no word on whether the basic rear-wheel drive (RWD) model will get a Lexus Teammate, but Lexus says the AWD hybrid will arrive in dealerships this fall. Prices and other details will still be forthcoming.
We know the 2022 Lexus LS 500h AWD will continue with a 3.5 liter V6 petrol engine and two electric motors, pumping a combined output of 354 horsepower. It has a four-speed automatic gearbox combined with a CVT, perhaps the only vehicle in the industry to have one. According to Lexus, the RWD LS 500h accelerates to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds, not too bad for a full-size luxury sedan.
Lexus LS 2022 Exterior
Let’s start with the exterior first. The 2022 LS has arguably a slightly cleaner design when viewed from the front. The Z-shaped light unit no longer supports the simpler-looking cluster, which still fits the overall vehicle design. Other novelties include a new bumper and a darker color for the mesh grille.
For the exterior, there are revised lights on both ends, as well as a new coat of silver paint called Gin-ei Luster which Lexus says gives “deep shadows and strong highlights” in the shine. The shape of the side intakes found on the front fascia has also been revised, and the grille is darker in color.
But the back is pretty identical. Lexus doesn’t put a new tail light on the LS, but the graphics look a little sharper, even though the shape is the same as before. Can they do more there? Maybe, but they must have thought it was pointless to change the appearance of a car just yet.
On the outside, the newcomer paint is Gin-ei Luster, a silver hue that Lexus says “invites color to be perceived as texture.” New headlights are also on the menu.
Mechanically, the Lexus LS 2022 uses an improved adaptive variable suspension which is now said to offer better damping and optimized performance when running on run-flat tires.
What’s more, on the LS 500h, the battery level helps kick earlier and harder during acceleration, which Lexus calls “the frequently used driving speed”. The LS 500 gets a similar change, in the sense that the initial engine torque transfer is greater at speeds often used for smoother and faster acceleration.
Lexus LS 2022 Interior
Inside the 2022 LS is a redesigned infotainment display, measuring 12.3 inches (same as before). What’s new about it is that it has been repositioned to sit closer to the driver so that the latter can access car functions via a new touch interface. On older models, you could only operate the system via the remote touch panel on the center console.
Not much else is different from a design perspective. Changes like a darker steering wheel and center console controls, or new upholstery, are nothing to watch out for.
Flowing lines, intricately patterned fabrics, and rich leather upholstery fill the LS cabin. If you want to look your best, go for real wood trim, artsy glass inserts, and smartly folded door panel fabric. The passenger space is wide enough for four adults.
Adding a fifth person on the standard three-spoke rear seat will keep the passenger from experiencing true luxury, so we recommend opting for the optional bucket seat. The rear seat is fixed, so bulky cargo items may not fit easily into the LS.
Luggage, however, for the LS500 and hybrid models is large, each containing six carry-on cases. Both the Audi A8 and Genesis G90 have the same amount of luggage.
All LS models come with Amazon Alexa, Apple CarPlay capability, navigation, and 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, all controlled via the new 12.3-inch touchscreen. That means the cranky touchpad on the center console is no longer the only way to adjust vehicle settings, change audio sources, or set destinations in the navigation menu.
The system also recognizes several voice commands. But is it too much to ask for physical buttons for things like seat heaters? Lexus thought so. To activate this feature, the user must switch to the screen.
The big news is the addition of the Lexus Teammate, a suite of electronic driver assistance features, some of which are self-driving. Most importantly, the Lexus Teammate is upgradeable, which means that early adopters won’t have to miss out on new features added in the future.
One of the features of the Lexus Teammate is the Advanced Drive, which is designed for driving on the highway. According to Lexus, this feature can relieve motorists from having to use accelerators, brakes, and steering on stretches of road without pedestrians and cyclists, including where there are lane breaks and lane changes needed, although drivers still need to be vigilant and ready to take over if there was an emergency.
Another practical feature is Advanced Park. It takes care of the steering, acceleration, braking, and shifting required for parking, and provides a 360-degree view of the driver’s surroundings for easy monitoring.
Lexus engineers also made a few minor chassis improvements to improve ride and comfort. These include more responsive suspension dampers, stiffer sway bars, and new engine mounts designed to reduce vibrations into the cab. The noise cancellation system helps to tune things in the cabin.
2022 Lexus LS 500h Technology
Lexus’ flagship sedan, LS, finally got the driver-assist technology it deserves. The all-wheel-drive version of the Lexus LS 500h 2022 will be available with a new system called the Lexus Teammate when the sedan arrives at dealerships this fall, Lexus said in a press release Thursday.
Teammates conform to Level 2 on the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) vehicle automation scale. That means offering a high level of driver assistance but still needing an attentive driver at all times. No self-driving cars are sold today, and this system is well below that threshold.
The Teammate, which will not be available on the rear-wheel-drive version of the LS 500h or the non-hybrid LS 500 model, will launch with two main functions: Advanced Drive and Advanced Park. Lexus did not explain why only the hybrid would get the system.
Advanced Drive will allow the car to accelerate, brake, and steer to stay centered in the course and maintain a safe distance from other cars on the road with limited access. It will also be able to negotiate lane changes, navigate certain intersections, and operate in traffic jams, Lexus said. The carmaker calls it “hands-free, eye-on-the-road partial operation.”
Advanced Park will control steering, acceleration, braking, and forward or backward gear shifting when parking parallel or backward into a parking lot. The ultrasonic cameras and sensors will provide a bird’s-eye-view view so the driver can check the vehicle’s position, Lexus said. No details have been given on the sensor array, but cutouts on the front fender and front bumper suggest additional sensor placement, possibly radar.
Pricing and other information on the Lexus Teammate will be detailed closer to the launch of the 2022 LS 500h this fall. Note that the LS just got a refresher for the 2021 model year.
Lexus LS 2022 Engine
For the most part, powertrain. LS can be owned in two forms in the US, namely LS 500 and LS 500h. The LS 500 3.5 liter, twin-turbo V-6 with aluminum block and cylinder head delivers 416 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 442 pound-feet of torque between 1600 rpm and 4800 rpm.
We’ll stick with the standard twin-turbocharged V-6 engine and rear-wheel drive if only to spare the funds to pick the LS’s coolest features. We opted for the Luxury package – expensive but worth it – because it added heated and cooled front and rear seats with semi-aniline leather upholstery; 28-way power-adjustable front seat with massage; rear bucket; rear center console with touchscreen controls for climate, audio, and seat functions; four-zone automatic climate control; and sunscreen on the back.
Optional adjustable air suspension, 20-inch wheels, a 360-degree camera system, genuine wood interior trim, and a heated steering wheel covered in wood and leather are all needed to add to the Luxury package. This pushed the price of the LS500 up $ 17,000, but it was still cheaper and better equipped than the base Mercedes-Benz S-class.
The standard engine on the LS is a dual-turbo 3.4-liter V-6 engine that makes a very smooth 416 horsepower. It sounds smooth and powerful when under heavy throttle but noiseless when driving. 10-speed automatic handling of gear changes.
Performance is more than adequate for this car’s luxury mission, but the V-8 and Mercedes-Benz S-class powered variants of the BMW 7-series proved to be faster on the test track.
The model bearing the LS500h features a hybrid powertrain that uses a 3.5-liter V-6 and two electric motors to produce 354 horsepower. While the standard twin-turbo V-6 operates smoothly, the hybrid setup feels subtle and not at all luxurious.
The engine sounds husky and rough, and the transmission – a combination of a continuously variable automatic (CVT) and a four-speed automatic – steps through preset gear ratios with all the crisp wet cornflakes.
The electrified Lexus LS, a 500-hour hybrid, fits into a 3.5-liter V-6 engine but is assisted by a pair of electric motors. The power output for the ICE is 295 horsepower, while the entire hybrid system delivers 354 horsepower which is delivered to the wheels by the luxurious CVT. 0-60 mph takes 5.1 seconds on the RWD model and 5.2 seconds on the AWD model, while the top speed is limited to 136 mph.
2022 Lexus LS 460

2022 Lexus LS MPG
The fuel economy estimates for the hybrid are indeed better than the non-hybrid LS500 figures, so if you’re looking to save money on the pump, we guess that’s the redeeming quality of the LS500h powertrain.
Whereas the rear-wheel-drive LS500 claims a 30/19 mpg highway/city, the rear-wheel-drive LS500h gets a 33/25 mpg rating from the EPA. In our real-world testing, the all-wheel-drive LS500h managed to deliver 30-mpg on our 200-mile highway fuel-economy test. The LS500 F Sport all-wheel-drive is capable of producing 26 mpg.
2022 Lexus LS 500h Release Date
Further information regarding the functionality of the Lexus Teammate will be available later this year. The AWD 2022 LS 500h with Lexus Teammate and LS 500 is expected to arrive at dealerships later this Autumn.
Lexus LS 500 Price 2022
There is no price tag associated with the Lexus LS 2022, but the 2020 models start at $ 75,450. That is the RWD LS500. The AWD will cost $ 78,670, the F-Sport will demand at least $ 81,450, while the LS 500h hybrid starts at $ 80,010 in the guise of RWD and $ 83,230 under AWD.
